Residents are encouraged to join their local Bobbies on the beat and tell them what problems they want tackling in their community.

The community walkabout takes place on Friday 4 March, from 2pm, starting at the Honeywell Centre on Ashton Road.

The call comes as Operation Galahad, an operation to reduce burglary and target known offenders across the Alexandra neighbourhood, moves to Hathershaw.

Neighbourhood officers have been out in force across the community, visiting residents to advise them how to safeguard their homes and keep criminals out in the cold.

Locking all doors and windows, using an alarm, leaving a light on and keeping valuables, including car keys, out of view and out of reach, are simple ways to help keep thieves out.

Sergeant Gaynor Wardle of the Oldham West Neighbourhood Policing Team said: “We have had some great success so far, sending a clear message to burglars that they are not welcome in Alexandra. Since the start of the new year we have made a number of arrests and visited over 100 residents to provide crime prevention advice.

“As part of our Service Promise we will listen and act on community concerns and work with them to make their neighbourhoods safer. This community walkabout is an ideal opportunity for residents to tell us what improvements they want to see in their neighbourhood and It is let us know what they think about the work officers are doing to keep them safe.”

Police also want the public to provide vital information they need to bring criminals to justice.

Information that will help police build up evidence against burglars includes names and addresses as well as descriptions of suspects such as height, build, colouring and clothing. Information like makes, models, colours and registration numbers of the vehicles used by suspects can also prove useful.

Residents can provide information to police directly on 0161 872 5050 or anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
